Campaign of the MonthLend your voice! Don't you have five minutes this month to write a letter, send an email, post on a blog, or tell a friend? Together we can create change! Knowledge is Power. April 2008 · Gender StudiesGender studies go far beyond our scope of being women and brings us to defining and questioning the other titles we give ourselves, "woman, straight, lesbian, queer, female, girly, manly, butch., etc." Gender studies are about our sexual identity and our personal identity, and our rights around these topics. This month is dedicated to educating ourselves about gender studies and becoming advocates for the rights of all people, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. One of the best resources for this topic is the Human Rights Campaign, which is dedicated to working for equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered individuals. There are plenty of activist links on the site to get involved. Plus, our April 26 Feminist Discussion/Movie night will focus around Gender Studies, along with showing the documentary Southern Comfort that follows the touching struggles, joys and sorrows of a female to male transgender individual. March 2008 · Equal Pay For WomenJoin the National Organization for Women (NOW) as they battle to restore equal rights pay for women. Women are still only paid 77 cents to men's dollar, despite four decades of civil rights law that has banned wage discrimination. The Fair Pay Restoration Act will be in the Senate later this month. This bill will restore the right for women who have suffered pay discrimination to seek back pay and other compensation despite the current ruling that it must be done within 180 days of a discriminatory payment received. The Fair Pay Restoration Act will treat each and every discriminatory pay check as a new act of discrimination. NOW has an easy online form that sends a letter to your senators showing your support, it even searches your senators by ZIP code. Couldn't be any easier to lend your voice. Please share this with other women you know. Time is of the essence. February 2008 · Dove Campaign for Real BeautySend five women you know the campaign for real beauty video shorts. The Dove Campaign was developed to help free the next generation from self-limiting beauty stereotypes. Committed to reaching five million young women by the end of 2010, the Dove Self-Esteem Fund invites you to play a role in supporting and promoting a wider definition of beauty. January 2008 · Notable WomenLearn about one notable woman in 'her'story: (see a list of names from the Women's International Center to get you started; you should be able to google any of these names. If you have names not on this list, e-mail us, we'll add them for the next time we do this.) Tell five people you know about this person. Ask them to read about it and if they feel inspired tell five more. Together we will work on keeping "herstory" alive. Let us not allow anyone to forget the important presence of women who have changed the world. They are often written out of our history books, but they shall forever be carried in our hearts. |
